Intimate Mourning Art Workshops: Creating Meaningful Memorials From What Remains

When someone we love dies, the things they leave behind can suddenly carry a different kind of meaning.

A piece of clothing, a favorite bottle, a handwritten note, jewelry, photographs, tools, a cherished object, or even something as ordinary as a hait pin can become deeply connected to the person we miss. These belongings can hold memories, stories, and a sense of their presence.

Mourning Art workshops offer a way to transform those meaningful remnants into something tangible—a keepsake, artwork, or memorial that can continue to tell their story.

An Invitation to Preserve Your Loved One's Story

Mourning Art is a private, mobile creative experience where family members or loved ones are guided in creating a personal memorial using belongings that belonged to someone who has died, or objects that remind you of them. Rather than putting meaningful possessions away in a box or letting them remain unused, we can thoughtfully incorporate them into something you can see, hold, display, and return to over time.

Depending on what feels meaningful to you, a workshop may result in a personal keepsake, shadow box, assemblage, small sculpture, wall piece, or other mixed-media memorial.

You don't need to be an artist. There is no artistic experience required. The process is about memory, connection, and meaning—not artistic perfection.

Creating Something From What Remains

There is something powerful about giving physical form to a memory. A loved one's belongings can become part of a new object without losing the significance they already hold. Their clothing might become part of an assemblage. A favorite object might be preserved within a shadow box. Small personal items might be brought together to create a sculptural portrait of a life, a relationship, or a cherished memory. And if you don't have belongings to work with, that's okay. We can create a memorial using symbols, colors, materials, photographs, words, or objects that represent your loved one and what they meant to you.

The finished piece becomes more than an artwork. It becomes a physical reminder of a person whose life continues to have meaning.

A Private, Mobile Experience

Mourning Art workshops are designed to come to you. Rather than gathering in an unfamiliar classroom or studio, the workshop can take place in a meaningful or comfortable setting for you and your family. The intimate format allows space for conversation, memories, reflection, and creativity.

You may choose to create together as a family, with a partner, or with a small group of people who shared a connection with your loved one. The workshop can also be adapted to your circumstances and the materials you have available.

Memorial Artwork Created For You

You don't have to create the artwork yourself. For families who would rather entrust the creative process to an artist, I also offer custom memorial artwork created from personal belongings, photographs, memories, and meaningful objects.

Projects can include:

  • Personal keepsakes

  • Shadow boxes

  • Mixed-media assemblages

  • Sculptural memorials

  • Memorial displays

  • Niche and mausoleum displays

  • Cemetery offerings

  • Funeral and celebration-of-life displays

  • Exhibition pieces honoring a loved one's life

Together, we can determine what should be preserved, what should be incorporated, and what form best expresses the story you want to remember.

Because Memory Deserves a Place

Flowers eventually fade. Funeral programs are placed away. Photographs can remain on a phone or computer. But there is something different about being able to hold or stand before an object that contains pieces of someone's story.

A memorial artwork can become part of your home, a family's shared collection, a cemetery or mausoleum display, or a place of remembrance. It can give future generations something tangible through which to encounter the person they may never have had the opportunity to know.

What remains can become something sacred.

Mourning Art is an invitation to slow down, remember, and create a lasting tribute to someone whose life mattered.

Their story doesn't end with what they left behind. Sometimes, what remains gives us a way to keep telling it.
